VMC Delivers Aid Amidst Emergencies in Durban South Africa
In the event of an emergency, there is a heightened need for health. Displaced persons are usually at risk for development of infectious diseases like pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, skin conditions and many experience the complications of chronic ailments like hypertension and diabetes mellitus because they lack access to good shelter, food, medications and to specialized care.
The Volunteer Medical Corps Disaster Response and Relief Program helps us to contribute to reducing the number of deaths and the spread of disease among families affected by humanitarian emergencies such as floods, fire outbreaks, earthquakes, political conflict etc.
Our teams intervene by providing curative treatments, health education sessions, preventive screening services, antenatal care for pregnant women, prevention and treatment of childhood illness.
Our team of volunteers responded to a fire outbreak in Dakota Beach Informal Settlement, Isipingo, Durban, South Africa. During this emergency, over 300 shacks or makeshift homes were destroyed by the raging inferno, this left more than 1,000 people homeless and in need of support.
Our team led by Dr Masha Maharaj delivered health talks, assessed the various families and provided them with free medical care, emergency care for wounds was carried out, specialist pediatric and geriatric care services were made available to the children and to the elderly victims of the fires.
Large boxes of clothing, food items, and first aid medical supplies (medical kits) were distributed to the displaced families.
Among the hundreds of patients seen, many received salvation and each was blessed with copies of the Healing to the Nations magazines as well as the Rhapsody of Realities daily devotional.
By supporting the Volunteer Medical Corps 1 million Good Deeds Campaign; you will be making it possible for us to provide vulnerable groups such as women and children with access to essential health and nutrition services in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
