Borno State located in North East Nigeria has been severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, which has left only a third of the available health facilities in the state functional. Access to qualitative health care services has been beyond the reach of many of the residents.
Mrs N. Dauda was one of those affected by this dire condition; having been scheduled for an emergency appendectomy, she was found to be destitute, without funds or health insurance. Her husband was an out-of- work laborer who could barely fend for her and their four children.
In response to her urgent need for surgical attention, members of the Volunteer Medical Corps Maiduguri led by Dr. Dumebi raised the funds required and paid for her surgery.
Today Mrs Dauda is alive and well.
