Blood donation is a voluntary practice that helps the sick or injured get the blood transfusion they require. June 14 every year is a special day set aside to advocate for the need for safe blood and safe blood products. This year, World Blood Donor Day slogan is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”. This aims to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities.
Blood is essential for children suffering from severe anemia due to malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions, victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters, and accidents, as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures. Many women die while going through childbirth; hemorrhage is a common cause of maternal mortality. Many maternal deaths can be avoided by building up their hemoglobin levels when they are pregnant and timely and safe blood transfusions if and when the need arises. Access to safe blood from voluntary blood donors like you is essential to reducing maternal deaths, especially in resource-poor nations.
